You pronounced “Civil War” incorrectly.

North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue recently had this to say in an interview:

You have to have more ability from Congress, I think, to work together and to get over the partisan bickering and focus on fixing things. I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that. The one good thing about Raleigh is that for so many years we worked across party lines. It’s a little bit more contentious now but it’s not impossible to try to do what’s right in this state. You want people who don’t worry about the next election.

But she misspoke. She wasn’t calling to “suspend democracy”, she was calling for “civil war”.

Of all the events that could potentially lead this country into a civil war in my lifetime, this would be the fastest (outside of possibly “suspending” the Presidential election, or repealing the Second Amendment). The ink wouldn’t even have time to dry if this “plan” were signed into law or Executive Order before shots were being fired by Americans, at Americans.

I can’t believe that anyone (an elected politician at that) would say this jokingly when being interviewed, let alone while being serious. Has this woman lost her mind?

This is me being an American Citizen who understands the US Constitution, forget politics: if we are not voting for elected officials, then this government has turned tyrannical, and will be dealt with accordingly.

Our third President Thomas Jefferson once shot a man on the White House lawn for treason (Rodney Cox. Who was also interestingly enough, from North Carolina).

Somewhere round about 235 years ago, the people of this country overthrew a “lawful” government because they didn’t get a vote in how much their breakfast beverage was taxed. Do you really think that you can “…suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress…” and survive the resulting backlash?

I don’t.
